How to Play FreeCell Solitaire

FreeCell Solitaire is like Klondike Solitaire and Yukon Solitaire. There is a Tableau where you stack (pack) cards in alternating color, descending order. There is a Foundation where you stack cards in same-suit, ascending order. In FreeCell Solitaire the Tableau has 8 columns. There are 4 free cells where any single card can be placed. The rules for moving to an occupied column are that the card being moved has the opposite color and one value less than the card it is placed on. Cards that are packed (alternating color, descending value) can move along with the card being moved if there are enough free cells. For example the Jack of Hearts, 10 of Spades, 9 of Diamonds can move to be placed on the Queen of Clubs if there are 2 or more free cells empty. If a column of the Tableau is empty, any card can be placed there. So, the free cells and empty Tableau columns are very valuable and you should choose wisely which card to place there. The cards in the Foundation are placed in 4 piles. One for each suit. The first card that can be placed in a Foundation pile is an Ace of the correct suit. The game is won when all 4 piles in the Foundation are complete with Ace through King of each suit.

FreeCell Solitaire Details

FreeCell Solitaire has 3 areas: the Foundation, the Tableau, and the free cells. The Tableau has 8 columns that are initially either 7 or 6 face-up cards. The Foundation has 4 empty piles initially. The free cells have 4 spaces that are initially empty. During gameplay, cards can move between all 3 locations, but the goal is to move them all to the Foundation. The strategy is to pack the cards in the 8 columns of the Tableau in alternating color, descending value. Cards can be moved the Foundation at any time, but must follow the rule that they are the same suit as the pile and one greater value. So when the pile is empty, an Ace can be placed on the empty pile. Cards in the Tableau can move between columns if they follow the alternating color, one less value rule. Several cards can be moved at once if there are enough free cells. Any card can be placed in a free cell space, but choose wisely which card to place. The game is won when all cards are placed in the Foundation in same suit, ascending order.
